Woman tells her parents that she was accepted to med school in the best way
There are major milestones in life that are usually celebrated with elaborate parties, intimate dinners, and grand fanfare. But sometimes, all you need is a Barbie doll and some poignant emotions to make a moment truly special. Limayre Mendoza has faced many challenges in her pursuit of becoming a doctor. But after many years, she's finally taking the next step towards her dreams, and wanted to share that moment with her parents and her daughter. In the video uploaded to Twitter on Thursday, Mendoza's daughter, Gabby, can be seen giving her grandfather a doctor Barbie doll, with a message written on the box: "Mi mami va ser Doctora" ("My mom's going to be a doctor.") Figuring out that Mendoza has been accepted to med school, he asks her "seriously?" before jumping up and giving his daughter a big hug. Next is the grandmother, who asks, "did they accept you?" and gives her another hug when Mendoza replies, "yeah, they accepted me yesterday!" "I knew I wanted to be a doctor when I was in third grade but what really solidified my decision was seeing how much medicine impacts the community," Mendoza told Mashable. Mendoza started college when Gabby was only a month old, and faced a long road reaching her goals. "They were definitely many challenges," she said. "I would use my breaks in between classes to pump breast milk for the next day and of course I worked full time to be able to provide. I graduated in 2016 with my bachelors in biology. But unlike a traditional pre med I did not get accepted in a program until almost four years after graduation. Prepping for things like the MCAT and shadowing experiences was just something I could not do while in undergrad due to my circumstances." Through it all, though, she says that her parents have always been her number one supporters. They let her live with them, and help watch Gabby late into the night so that she could study for exams. After moving out of their house, they still supported her morally and emotionally, which is why she says that sharing this moment with them was so important. "The next couple of years are going to be really rigorous and life challenging but Gabby and I have a unique bond because of it," Mendoza told Mashable. "She has witnessed the hours I have had to spend away from her just for this moment but she never reprimands me for it. She’s really my biggest cheerleader and is so understanding in spite of her young age." Mendoza says that Gabby and her son (she is now married and had another child in 2017) are what really push her, and she hopes that one day they get to inspire even more than she has been able to. We wish her all the best of luck in the next step of her journey. And for that post-med school announcement, may we suggest a nice Graduation Day Barbie? Tweet may have been deleted
