Sketchy dummy model could be Apple's final design for the iPhone 8

We've heard a ton about what's probably coming with the iPhone 8 -- but we still don't even know for sure if Apple has even decided on the flagship's final design.

The company's indecisiveness about the final version of the flagship's anniversary model has reportedly been one of the factors in its rumored delay, along with more technical issues, like how to embed a thumbprint sensor beneath its touted OLED display.

BGR shared a set of images purporting to show a rough mockup based on Apple's final design, giving us a look at what might be the future of the iPhone. The device shown in the pics, which the site obtained "exclusively" from unnamed sources, was supposedly based on schematics leaked from the factories that will actually produce the devices. It's not a working model or even a prototype -- just a physical proof of concept.

Though chances that this is the actual design are slim, the rough mockup shows some features we've been expecting based on other leaks: an edge-to-edge screen with no visible bezels, no physical home button, and an all glass and stainless steel sandwich design that harkens back to the iPhone 4.

The mockup's rear has the expected vertically-oriented dual camera rig, but what's more important is what we don't see: a rear fingerprint scanner, like Samsung had to settle for on the Galaxy S8.

BGR claimed the images posted were an "exclusive first look" at the iPhone 8's final design -- but the device shown in the photos appears to be identical to pictures of another "dummy" device posted by designer Benjamin Geskin last month. That handset was more explicitly said to be based on specs leaked from a source at Apple's manufacturer, Foxconn.

Geskin updated the leaked images using his design chops and insight from other leaks to show off what that version of the design might look in its final form. Only the slightest hint of a bezel remains at the top of the device for the front facing camera, while the rear dual camera and the Apple logo have been spruced up from the original pictures.

There's likely no way to know whether the device shown in BGR's pics is the same as the one originally posted by Geskin -- just like there's no way to confirm that Apple has actually settled on this (or any) design as its final choice for the next iPhone. The company doesn't comment on rumors, and holds its secrets as close to the chest as it can until its breathless keynote events.

The chances of this being the actual iPhone 8 design are low, especially without any additional specs to go along with the images. Until we hear from Apple, though -- which will more than likely happen in September, not at the World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) event in June -- we won't know for sure.
